Treating Dry Skin

Many people believe they have dry skin, but true dryness is less common than you might think. To understand how to treat it effectively, it’s important to know what dry skin really means and what causes it.

What Is Dry Skin?

When you think of dry skin, you may imagine tightness, flaking, or discomfort. These are symptoms of dryness, but true dry skin as a skin type refers to lipid-dry skin.

Our skin naturally produces two main types of lipids (fats):

  • Sebum, produced by the sebaceous glands, helps moisturise the skin and forms part of its protective barrier. In lipid-dry skin, these glands produce little to no sebum, meaning the skin cannot lubricate or protect itself as effectively.

  • Epidermal lipids, produced by the Lamellar Bodies in the mid-epidermis (Stratum Granulosum), act like the ‘mortar’ between skin cells (the ‘bricks’). Together, they form a strong physical barrier that locks in moisture and protects from irritants and microorganisms.

When the skin lacks both sebum and epidermal lipids, its natural chemical and physical barrier is compromised, leaving it more vulnerable to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity.

Common Causes of Dry Skin

Dry skin can develop for several reasons:

  • Genetics – Inheriting a lipid-dry skin type from one or both parents

  • Intrinsic ageing – Sebaceous activity naturally slows down with age, reducing oil production

  • Low-fat diets – A lack of essential fatty acids in the diet can affect the skin’s ability to produce healthy lipids

  • Medications – Some prescription medicines can contribute to dryness; always check with your GP if you notice changes

Assessing Dry Skin

Before treating dryness, it’s vital to identify whether your skin is lipid-dry or dehydrated.

Many people confuse the two. Lipid-dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water. Both can feel tight, rough, or uncomfortable, but they require different approaches.

At Enhance Beauty, I use diagnostic skin analysis to assess your skin on a cellular level. Using advanced scanner technology, we can determine whether lipids are present and whether your barrier function is intact. Often, the skin is still producing oil, but its barrier has become compromised, leading to increased Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and that familiar feeling of tightness and dryness.

How to Treat and Support Dry or Dehydrated Skin

The good news is that both conditions can be corrected with the right approach.

For dehydrated skin, I focus on restoring the skin’s barrier and moisture balance using:

  • Ceramides and essential fatty acids to strengthen and repair

  • Hydrating treatments that lock in moisture

  • Correct pH cleansers free from harsh ingredients such as SLS

For true lipid-dry skin, I recommend:

  • Emollient-rich formulations containing ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol

  • Gentle, barrier-supporting facials and lipid-infusion treatments to replenish what the skin lacks

BYONIK® Pulse-Triggered Laser – Advanced Hydration and Cellular Repair

One of my most advanced treatments for dry or compromised skin is the BYONIK® Pulse-Triggered Laser – the only system in the world that repairs skin at a cellular level while locking in hydration.

This intelligent technology combines pulsed laser energy with medical-grade hyaluronic acid gels. As it synchronises with your heartbeat, it rejuvenates cells, protects telomeres (the DNA caps responsible for ageing), and boosts metabolism for visibly healthier, more resilient skin.

The result? A smoother, plumper, deeply hydrated complexion that feels comfortable and alive again.

Why Does My Skin Feel Dry?

When the skin’s lipid balance is disrupted, its ability to hold onto moisture decreases. Without enough sebum and epidermal lipids, the protective barrier weakens – allowing water to escape and irritants to enter.

This is why you may experience flaking, rough texture, or sensitivity, especially in colder months or after using products that strip the skin’s natural oils.

Could It Be Dehydration Instead?

Dehydration is often mistaken for dryness. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, looks dull, or shows fine lines that appear more visible, you may be lacking water, not oil.

A professional skin analysis can reveal whether your barrier has been disrupted or if hydration levels are low. Once identified, we can restore balance through targeted treatments and functional homecare.

The Look and Feel of Dry Skin

Dry skin can appear flaky, itchy, or rough to touch. It may feel uncomfortable and, in some cases, sensitive or reactive. While some people experience dryness only in winter, others find it’s a constant concern due to genetics or ageing.

No matter the cause, your skin deserves gentle, nourishing care designed to strengthen and protect from within.
